Meet Designers & Makers at the Urban Market in Praça da Alegria

Designers and Makers are the watchwords this month in Porto. The Urban Market is back in Porto, on 18th and 19th July, from 10am to 6pm, with three editions in two iconic places in town: the Hard Club and the exquisite Praça da Alegria, in Bonfim.

Porto Book Fair honours Leonor de Almeida and Maria de Sousa

This edition of Porto Book Fair is about literature written by women and thus the tribute is to poet Leonor de Almeida, who remains somewhat a mystery to the larger audience, and who will have her name inscribed in the Avenida das Tílias (aka Linden Avenue), and also the immunologist and poet, as well, Maria de Sousa, who recently passed away due to Covid-19.

The Puppet Museum reopens with things that matter: an exhibition and a new space dynamic

Following a four month period of closed doors due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Puppet Theatre of Porto reopens on 15th July, featuring an exhibition that revisits some of the most iconic work by the theatre.

"That Obscure Object of Desire" closes cinema cycle devoted to Buñuel

The last film by Luís Buñuel - That Obscure Object of Desire (Ese oscuro objeto del deseo) - which is considered one of his most ironic comments on desire and sexuality, will be on show at Campo Alegre cine studio, on 26th July, at 3.30pm.

Note to self: visit the largest European Lego exhibition at Porto Customs

Legos, these interlocking plastic bricks that have been around since most of us were children are now on display at the Customs building in Porto. This is the largest European exhibition and it stays on show until 23rd August.

Municipal Ateliers open applications from 20th July to 24th August

The Municipal Ateliers applications open on 20th July, but the regulation is already available for consultation. The project was approved unanimously in the last Municipal Executive Meeting, and it will provide six spaces to visual artists in Porto, by means of affordable rental for a three-year period.

August will see fifteen premieres and three in-house productions by the National Theatre São João

August will see the the centennial celebrations of TNSJ, which will be ongoing until March 2021. The programming include shows and performances hosted at other venues that are run by TNSJ, namely the Teatro Carlos Alberto (TeCA) and the Mosteiro de São Bento da Vitória. Celebrations hd to be readjusted to the ongoing health crisis.

"Shop in Porto": tracking goods has never been easier

There is a new context to see the purchase of goods and services in Porto and that is the "Shop in Porto" app, the new electronic commerce online platform to promote traditional trade in town. It is worth recalling that street retail in Porto opened doors following all the necessary preventive measures due to Covid-19.

The weekend is here and, in line with the pedestrian precincts that Mayor Rui Moreira and his Executive are implementing, people are able to enjoy the fourth weekend straight of car free zones in major streets in town. This means that shoppers can leisurely enter shops or cafés and practice social distancing in a safe way, either on foot or bike or even enjoy what the city has to offer, namely tables from cafés and restaurants spilling out into the streets, between 8am Saturday and 8pm Sunday.

More than 70 caricatures of Einstein go on display at the Galleria II to pay tribute to the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics. Theses caricatures were part of the 22nd edition of PortoCartoon and are complemented by a caricature display on Chico Buarque, Camões Prize 2019. Take time to pause and feel in Porto.
