Porto Municipal Gallery and Kunsthalle Lissabon present "Astray", by Caroline Mesquita, French artist of Portuguese descent, who showcases her work for the first time in Portugal.

The project "Astray" will hold two openings as the artistic project includes two chapters, to be presented in two different venues, the Kunsthalle Lissabon and Porto Municipal Gallery, which are jointly cooperating to showcase Mesquita's artwork.

The first chapter, themed "Prologue", is on display at Kunsthalle Lissabon starting today, 12 December, at 6.30 pm.

This is the onset of a project aimed at disturbing the gallery's architecture, where the audience meets a new setting, and the imaginary of an archaeological exploration combines with science fiction: a somewhat unknown machine lies half-buried in the floor.

Mesquita recreates a bewildering backdrop, establishing a narrative that offers an alternative story of another civilization or society, of which the audience knows nothing about.

The "Astray" projects unfolds in two moments in time; the beginning is on 12 December with the opening of the "Prologue" at Kunsthalle Lissabon, at 6.30 pm. And the second will be at Porto Municipal Gallery, introducing the body of works at Porto Municipal Gallery, from 16 March to 19 May 2019, curated by Sofia Lemos.

Posteriorly, the organisation will publish a bilingual edition on the artists' artwork, which comprises both individual exhibitions.

Caroline Mesquita, whose family is from Porto, is a Portuguese descent artist born in 1989 in the city of Brest (France).
She lives and works in Marseille and she graduated at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, and also at The Mountain School of Art, in Los Angeles.

She has showcased her work in such galleries as the Centre Pompidou, in Paris, the Parcours Art Basel, the T293, in Rome, or the Mother Culture, in Los Angeles.

Caroline Mesquita won the 19th edition of the Prix Fondation d'Entreprise Ricard, in 2017.
