The Book Fair is back in Porto, in the Gardens of Palácio de Cristal, from 7 to 23 September. It is fair to say that this Fair is increasingly the city's calling card for the month of September, since 2014, the first time Porto City Hall directly organised the event.

The 2018 edition honours José Mário Branco. A man whose professional path has many dimensions. He is a singer, a composer, a lyricist, a producer and an actor.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of his life achievements and Porto Book Fair will honour his work, awarding him a linen tree in the Linen Avenue at Palácio de Cristal. Previous honours have been bestowed to Vasco Graça-Moura, Agustina Bessa-Luís, Mário Cláudio and Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.

This avenue is a walk in honour of those, living or departed, who have given back to society and to the city of Porto, with their outstanding professional contribution.
The event Schedule features an intense cultural and animation programme, as is now tradition, which includes debates, cinema, spoken word sessions, exhibitions, music, shows, workshops and activities for children and youth.

Two novelties for this year's edition are a residency programme with a still to be announced writer and the small scale publishing houses that were invited to take part in the Book Fair at no charge.

The fair's kick-off is scheduled for 8th September with the first of several debates (eight in total), featuring José Mário Branco.

This cycle of debates is coordinated by José Eduardo Agualusa. Other guests to other debates are Daniel Cohn-Bendit, the main face of the May 1968 Student Uprising and historian Rui Tavares.

Porto. Newspaper wrote that "It is precisely this revolutionary matrix that steers Porto Book Fair, a genuine communion with freedom".
