Porto City Hall promotes free canine socialisation and education to pets adopted from the Municipal Dog Kennel.
This measure is part of the Municipal Well-being and Control Plan of Dog and Cat Shelters, which calls for greater efforts to supporting and promoting the responsible adoption of rescued pets. Already in 2015, the Municipal Dog Kennel had introduced free pets sterilisation.

Classes are oriented by dog trainer Hugo Roby and are aimed at teaching dog owners the best way to dealing with their companion animal. And, as many of the pets from shelters and rescues are already house-trained, besides saving a pet's life, it often means introducing them to social and family life will be much smoother.

The next training sessions will take place on 16 February (at Parque da Pasteleira) and on 16 March (at Parque do Covelo), at 10.30 am.

Training sessions are free, but prior application is mandatory and with limited availability. Priority will be given to sterilised animals.

It should be highlighted that the City Hall has recently created a dog park. At Jardim de Paulo Vallada dogs can exercise and play off-leash in a controlled environment under the supervision of their owners.

Moreover, the establishment of a Centre for Official Mustering of Animals, which is under construction in Azevedo de Campanhã, is one of the foundations of the Municipal policy in this domain. This new infrastructure will replace the overburdened shelter of Porto, by offering excellent animal sanctuary for stray cats and dogs or even other animal species.
