European Commissioner Carlos Moedas and George Gaskell deliver a conference on "The technological Utopia - Innovation in the service of Humanity", at the Serralves Foundation, on 6 February, starting at 9.30 pm.

Carlos Moedas is the European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, and manages one of the largest science and innovation programmes in the world (77 billion euros).

British Professor and researcher, George Gaskell's current research draws on social representations theory, with a focus on science, technology and society, namely the issues of risk and trust and how values influence people's views about technological innovation.

This is the final event in the framework of the European Utopias Conference Cycle themed "The power of imagination and the imperatives of the future", which are being held from 7 May 2018 till 6 February 2019.

To talk about utopias is to understand the power of imagination to shape the future, guide human action and extend the boundaries of the feasible.

At a time when the future of Europe is somewhat uncertain, it is crucial to debate what can be achieved in the context of real progress, or as Václav Havel once said "Without dreaming of a better Europe we shall never build a better Europe".
