From 5 October 2018 to 6 January 2019, La Cité du Vin will give prominence to Porto and the Douro Wine Region, in the context of the temporary exhibition "Guest Wine Region, Porto: Douro, an alchemy between air, land and river".

Porto is the first Protected Designation of Origin in the world (sealed by a royal charter in 1756) and the Upper Douro region is in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Landscape List since 2001.

Every autumn, for a period of three months, the Fondation pour la Culture et les Civilisations du Vin presents a wine region or country the opportunity to showcase a cultural exhibition in its halls.

The purpose of such an event is to unveil a vineyard from the angle of culture and civilisation, featuring exhibitions that provide an active participation by the visitors, by means of an immersive approach thus enabling audiences to discover the authentic heritage of Porto and the Upper Douro wine region.

This exhibition is curated by Nuno Faria, artistic Director of the CIAJG - Centro Internacional das Artes de José de Guimarães, and Eglantina Monteiro, anthropologist and Head of Companhia das Culturas Association.

The staging of this exhibition has been created by Bartira Ghoubar, Brazilian architect and graduate of Mackenzie Presbyterian University in São Paulo.

"The Douro is the name of a river that has also become the name of a region. Over nearly 100 km, the Douro is both water and land. A real meeting of water, rock, nature, animals and men where everything is disproportionate: the deep and narrow valley, the burning temperature, the reverberation of the shiny schist and the stepped terraces that men have created on the slopes. For it was vines that gave the motivation to clear these steep slopes. All these elements come together here to reach a point of equilibrium, from which is born an irreplaceable form of plant life, transformed into wine by fermentation", says Eglantina Monteiro, exhibition curator.

Porto is part of the Great Wine Capitals - GWC, and with a relevant importance on wine tourism.
