Lecture on climate change by Will Steffen at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto

Will Steffen, a renowned researcher on climate change, will deliver a lecture at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, on 25 December, at 4.30 pm.

Entrance is free.

"Earth System Dynamics: A Systems Approach to the Anthropocene" is the theme of the lecture, whose topic umbrella is climate change and sustainability.

The American Chemist, Will Steffen, holds a PhD by the University of Florida. Steffen was the executive director of the Australian National University (ANU) Climate Change Institute and a member of the Australian Climate Commission until its dissolution in September 2013.

From 1998 to 2004, he was the executive director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme, a co-ordinating body of national environmental change organisations based in Stockholm.

Steffen is known for advocating with Paul Crutzen, Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1995, the concept of the Anthropocene, on the destruction of the ozone layer. Together with Johan Rockström, they have initiated the international debate on planetary boundaries.

During this conference, which is specially targeted at the academia, Will Steffen will adress the outcome of his most recent findings, namely the Hothouse Earth scenario.

Will Steffen is also a founding member of the Common Home of Humanity.
