Leixões is one of Portugal's major seaports, located 4 km north of the Douro River, in Matosinhos municipality, near the city of Porto.

Portugal's Minister of the Sea, Ana Paula Vitorino, described the largest investment to be made in optimising the Port of Leixões, in the next ten years, next to the Cruise Terminal.

This investment will improve access to the terminal as well as the operation of the container terminal, enabling larger container ships to enter the port and berth at the terminal.

It involves overall investment of EUR 320 million and completion is scheduled for 2025.

The president of the Port Authority, Brogueira Dias, announced that the environmental impact study of the extension works is to be released soon.

The Mayor of Matosinhos, Eduardo Pinheiro, stated that the Port of Leixões is one of the best examples of Port/city interface.

Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto, pointed out the strategic importance of the Port of Leixões within the country and recalled the importance of a Port not only to export but also to import.
