Porto and Galicia landmark cooperation

The President of the Xunta de Galicia was awarded the city's Honour Medal by the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira. Alberto Nuñez Feijoo was awarded the highest municipal distinction "for his contribution to the relationship between the North of Portugal and Galicia".

The Mayor of Porto highlighted the importance of the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula as a euro region and the significance of the landmark cooperation between both territories in various domains, namely economic, tourism, entrepreneurship, design, innovation, science and investigation.

According to Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto "the once only tentative commercial exchanges between Galicia and the North of Portugal are now outstanding trade relations."

"We want to be the land of opportunity, we want to open ourselves to the world, we want to be competitive, we want to be bold...the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula has become a territory of choice that can attract investment", the Mayor added.

Alberto Nuñez Feijóo in turn, sees both regions facing the future heads-on and aware of the importance of cooperation in such troubled times for Europe. 

The President of the Xunta de Galicia mentioned the relevance of the fraternity relation lived by both regions- Galicia and the North of Portugal- as micro-markets of vital importance for both Portugal and Spain and raised the issue of Brexit and the early election in Great Britain as signs that very clearly show that today we must all cooperate to building a united Europe.

The official visit program of the head of the regional government of Galicia also includes visits to UPTEC - Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto and I3S - Institute of Research and Innovation in Health, and a visit to the exhibition of works by Joan Miró: Materiality and Metamorphosis in Serralves. 

The trip will conclude with an official dinner at the Porto Commercial Association, at Palácio da Bolsa.
