Porto and Bangkok have created a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), where the two parties agree to reach vital points of accord in establishing cooperation relationships in the tourism sector.

The Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira, jointly with Councillor for Economy, Tourism and Trade, Ricardo Valente and a municipal delegation visited the capital city of Thailand to meet with government entities and business entrepreneurs.

Rui Moreira was hosted by the Governor of Bangkok, where the friendship links and the will to cooperate in the tourism sector were part of the welcoming speeches.

The core of the MoU between Porto and Bangkok is to establish good practice exchange in the field of sustainable tourism whilst maintaining their traditional and authentic features, namely the cultural tourism and the rich historic heritage of both destinations that need preserving.

It is worth mentioning that Porto was three times awarded Best European Destination (2012, 2014 and 2017) and that Bangkok was also considered Best Asian-Pacific Destination for three times (2016, 2017 and 2018).

This MoU is also signed in the context of the "profound historic link between both regions", namely the celebrations of the 500 years Friendship and Trade Treaty between Portugal and the kingdom of Siam.
