Porto hosts IV European Congress on Jewellery

The IV European Congress on Jewellery, themed on Centres and Peripheries in European Jewellery from Antiquity to 21st Century, will be held in Porto, at the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Porto, on 29 and 30 November.

This event is organised by the Research Centre for Science and Technology of the Arts, the Doctoral Course in Heritage Studies (School of Arts-UCP), in the Auditório Carvalho Guerra Auditorium.

Following the interesting lectures in La Bañeza (Léon), and Madrid, Barcelona, the fourth meeting of the European Congress on Jewellery invites lecturers to address the idea of centres and peripheries in the context of making jewellery.

The two-day event is divided in five sessions, covering antiquity till present time, dwelling on the aesthetics and the history of jewellery making all over Europe, and on how the rest of the world has influenced this craft in Europe.

The main themes to be addressed are Form and ornament in jewellery, Jewellery and the other Arts, Ornament and popular culture, Materials and techniques and The exchange and circulation of jewels.

Concurrently, the exhibit "Mostrar para seduzir: catálogos e outros documentos da joalharia europeia", will be on show at the Campus da Foz, featuring original documents, bills, invoices, catalogues and other graphic materials, enabling the understanding of European Belle Époque jewellery.
