The Health Institute of Research and Innovation (i3S), in Porto, will lead a European consortium entrusted with developing "matrices for knee joint cartilage repair", with an allocation of € 5.5 million euros", stated the project coordinator, Meriem Lamghari to News Agency Lusa.

"Our goal is to promote a suitable regeneration for cartilage. This is a rather difficult and complex process, hence the use of technology", explained Meriem Lamghari, researcher at i3S and the European leader of the project.

The RESTORE project aims at establishing 3D matrices (implants), by merging intelligent nanoparticles that will be able to repair knee cartilage damage and reduce osteoarthritis emergence, a condition that affects about 242 million people in the world.

The European research consortium on cartilage regeneration, which is managed by i3S, will be developed in partnership with Spain, Italy, Germany, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland.
