The Municipality of Porto has established a network of voluntary restaurants in 2016. This policy is aimed at providing assistance to homeless or people in need of a hot meal.

Former Joaquim Urbano Hospital is now able to work as the operation centre of this network of restaurants that helps homeless in Porto, by providing a kitchen that will prepare all the meals for this voluntary restaurants network.

Also, the Municipality has allocated funds to the Centre of Support to the Homeless (Centro de Apoio ao Sem-Abrigo - CASA), the entity that manages the solidarity restaurant in Batalha.

The City Council decided to enhance fund support because there has been a decline in the amount of food donated and an increase in demand of this type of help.
