Vestas, the largest wind turbine company in the world, selected the city of Porto as its new expanding market as part of the company's overall strategy.

This decision is based on talent availability and the proximity of research institutions and universities.

Vestas Wind Systems is a Danish corporation that manufactures, sells, and installs wind turbines. Vestas will set up an engineering centre which involved a total investment between 5 to 10 million euros, thereby creating hundreds of skilled jobs. In the meantime, 80 jobs will be created by the end of the year.

Within this expanding strategy, the company will begin recruiting among the academic community, performing a roadshow at Porto University, Minho University and Aveiro University.

The future I&D centre will develop close ties with the other I&D centres located in the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, and India and at the company's headquarters in Aarhus, Denmark. Still, this new research centre will work as an independent interface, contributing to the global Vestas portfolio and developing systems.

The company has yet not established the I&D centre location, but till then it will be settled at UPTEC - Science and Technology Park of Porto University.

Vestas has announced that "Porto offers a breadth of skills related to the areas Vestas is interested in, such as electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science".

The fact that this global energy company, the largest wind turbine company in the world, has chosen to expand from Porto clearly endorses the growing interest of big corporations to operate in Porto, resulting in an increase in the number of job placements.

The Danish company was founded in 1945, and as of 2013, it operates manufacturing plants in Denmark, Germany, India, Italy, Romania, the United Kingdom, Spain, Sweden, Norway, Australia, China, and the United States, and employs more than 21,000 people all over the world.
