More and more American citizens are visiting Portugal on account of enotourism, and the city of Porto is a mandatory stop in connection with the Douro Region World Heritage, and the Vinho Verde Region.

Porto is a part of the Great Wine Capitals (GWC), which comprises ten cities, in the northern and southern hemispheres. These cities share the common characteristic of an internationally acknowledged economic and cultural heritage - their wine regions.

"The latest figures from the tourism sector show that the number of guests and overnight stays originating in the United States has increased, which comes as a nice surprise as The United States is the largest market in the world considering enotourism. And we are aware that Porto being at the Great Wine Capitals Global Network has enhanced this trend", Councillor for Economy, Tourism and Trade for Porto City Hall, Ricardo Valente stated to newspaper Expresso.

It is worth highlighting that Porto has a promotion platform at the same level as cities as Bordeaux, in France, Adelaide, in Australia or Valparaiso, in Chile and that the type of touristic promotion is not in the format of the so-called mass-tourism but rather specialised segments of tourism.

Besides Porto, the other cities that are a part of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network are Adelaide, in Australia; Bilbao - Rioja, in Spain; Bordeaux, in France; Mainz - Rheinhessen, in Germany; Mendoza, in Argentina; San Francisco - Napa Valley, in the USA; Valparaiso - Casablanca Valley, in Chile; Verona, in Italy; and Lausanne, in Switzerland, the most recent entry.
