Urban initiatives that shape better cities, one fountain at a time

Porto has been labelled a smart city, a creative city, a city that thrives through green or sustainable environmental policies. Indeed, Porto is a foundry of creativity, opportunities and innovative social practices.

Thus, there is good reason to state that Porto holds to innovative social practices which can change it all for the better, even if in this case we talk animal well-being in town.

Those strolling through the beaches of Homem do Leme and Molhe, in Foz, surely realised that there is a new urban equipment. These are two innovative water fountains, also prepared to quenching both the thirst of people and animals alike.

This initiative is promoted by the City Hall, via Municipal Company Águas do Porto.

These water fountains were entirely made by Águas do Porto locksmiths and they alleviate a gap that existed in the supplying of drinkers in town. Also, they provide improved accessibility.

This solution involved the local knowledge and know-how within Porto Municipality.

"The design was entirely developed by our locksmiths, a challenge they have taken up gladly", says Frederico Fernandes, manager of Águas do Porto that has embraced this idea from day one.

The predominant colour of this urban utensil is English green and this solution will be replicated in other areas in Porto, namely around gardens and urban spaces.
