Why Porto leads when it comes to urban regeneration and architecture

"Un Puente al futuro" ["A Bridge to the future", free translation]. This is how Iberia's inflight magazine describes the city of Porto, highlighting the urban regeneration the city is undergoing and inviting you to discover Porto's example".

The city of Porto is presented as one of the world capitals of architecture, and pinpoints the example of the urban restoration in the eastern part of the city, namely the "Matadouro", a former slaughterhouse that is being refurbished to becoming a state of the art culture centre, combining leisure and businesses.

Porto is featured as unique as beautiful, with different aspects that reveal why this city is so special.

Japanese architect Kengo Kuma is in charge of regenerating Campanhã, the eastern part of town; the same architect that has recently signed the V&A Dundee Museum in Scotland and is preparing the new Olympic stadium in Tokyo for the 2020 Games.

Kuma will be working with Ooda Architects studio, by "five young architects, heirs of the tradition of masters such as Álvaro Siza Vieira or Eduardo Souto de Moura, both Pritzker Prize winners".

"It is impossible to talk about Portuguese architecture without mentioning the School of Porto", which will be the starting point to a new way of connecting the city of Porto, combining the old and the new to reinvent it.
