The Metro of Porto was used by 60.6 million passengers in 2017. An increase of around 2.6 million passengers compared to the year 2016.

Passenger number has increased, according to the Metro Company, which represents a growth of 4.5% compared to the 58 million passengers in 2006.

Jorge Delgado, Chair of the Management Board of Metro do Porto, added that this should be seen in the context of "employment growth and expanding economic activity", and thus impacting mobility and tourism related activities.

The Chair also highlighted the "high quality of service offered to the public as well as reliability", which make this public transportation system a prime choice among commuters and tourists to the city of Porto.
In percentage terms, Line E (violet), which connects the city to the airport was the fastest growing line.

So, it is safe to conclude that Porto light rail takes on a central role in urban life.

At present, the Metro transport system comprises six Lines and 82 stations, extending 67 kilometres.
