“Porto is the best host in the world”. Alfonso Lanza, director of Primavera Sound Barcelona, came to Porto to present the tenth edition of a festival that many consider one of the best in the world. With music scheduled for June 7, 8, 9 and 10, Primavera Sound Porto takes on the mission to grow, in many fields, towards sustainability.

In Casa do Roseiral, the mayor of Porto City Hall welcomed “Spring and Primavera [Spring] number 10”. “We’re thrilled”, Rui Moreira shared, certain that “Porto is very well prepared to host these festivals”.

Parque da Cidade continues to offer the best conditions to an event that, in its last edition, attracted circa a hundred thousand people. “It is a gem that we have, and we must have challenges that suit it”, the mayor considers.

Wanting Primavera Sound Porto to continuously exceed itself, the Municipality of Porto will increase its support to the festival and the Executive will propose offering it 650 million euros, certain that, as Rui Moreira highlights, “the impact in the economy is three times bigger than the festival’s budget”.

In the last edition, and according to a study conducted by ISAG – European Business School and by the Research Centre in Business Sciences and Tourism of the Consuelo Vieira da Costa Foundation, Primavera Sound has had an economical impact of 36,1 million euros in the city.

Preserving the “Parque” and keeping the challenges’ DNA

The director of the first internationalisation of the Catalan festival chose the word “growth” to characterise the tenth edition. Growth in the number of days – from three to four -, in the number of performances (76 artists), in budget, that ascends to 13 million euros, and in occupied territory (more than five to six hectares).

José Barreiro highlighted the importance of “the construction works in the expansion of Parque da Cidade” that allowed reaching “a new model that will allow us to grow sustainably in the next years”. Furthermore, sustainability was an commitment adopted by the organisation of Primavera Sound and Porto City Hall, always assuring the preservation of the “Parque”.

As for the director of the festival “it is a pleasure to have a municipality that understands and identifies with our DNA” that, José Barreiro believes, is “the DNA of new challenges, new proposals”, but also of a sustainable growth, without “growing all at once”. For this edition, Primavera Sound estimates being able to receive at least 45 thousand people daily.

Porto, Primavera, Parque da Cidade, parity

On his behalf, the director of the festival of Barcelona guaranteed that “we know which city was the first to bet on Primavera Sound”. “Success was not random”, believes Alfonso Lanza, referring “to the proximity of the Porto City Hall, that understands so well the needs of the festival”.

This year, Kendrick Lamar, Rosalía, Pet Shop Boys, Blur, Halsey, and New Order will perform in Parque da Cidade, in what the Catalan responsible considers “the most ambitious line-up of the last ten years of history”, but also “an equal line-up”, a mission that the organisation has been looking for since 2019.

Alfonso Lanza still added that “we could not be happier” with the location that hosts the festival, considering Parque da Cidade “one of the best enclosures of the world to host a festival”.

Emphasising that “Porto is the best host in the world”, the director of the Catalan festival stated that “Primavera Sound is also a Porto ambassador to the world”. “We are here to stay”, assured Alfonso Lanza.
