Debate on the future of democratic political representation on 22 January at Almeida Garrett Library

The National Assembly, jointly with Porto City Hall, promotes a colloquium to debate the future of democratic political representation in Portugal at the Municipal Library Almeida Garrett, on 22 January, on the occasion of the 200 years of the establishment of the Sanhedrin, in the context of the Bicentennial Celebrations of the Portuguese Constitutionalism.

This event is access free and starts at 9.30 pm. The colloquium will be opened by the President of the National Assembly, Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, and the Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira.

The session continues with the conference by Artur Santos Silva, former President of the commemorations of the centenary of the Portuguese Republic.

The Sanhedrin was an assembly established by Manuel Fernandes Tomás, Ferreira Borges, Silva Carvalho and Ferreira Viana, with masonry links, in Porto on 22 January 1818.

This secret association was aimed at framing liberalism in Portugal and played an active role in the organisation of the Liberal Revolution of August 1820, which would lead to the a Constitutional and Representative Government in Portugal and to the first Portuguese Constitution, dated 23 September 1822.
