It's been twelve years that the Porto Coastal area is granted the Blue Flag quality seal, as eight of its nine beaches were awarded this eco-label in recognition of their quality standards.

The Blue Flag is one of the world's most recognised voluntary eco-labels awarded to beaches that meet a series of stringent environmental, educational, safety, and accessibility criteria.

Besides, the beaches in Porto also maintained their "World Class" designation given by QUERCUS, which extends to eight out of the nine beaches in Porto.

The Portuguese Environment Agency is the organization that runs the Blue Flag programme in Portugal, and after an inspection, maintained the eight blue flag beaches in Porto and added two Accessible beaches.

Thus, the Praia do Carneiro and Praia do Homem do Leme offer the necessary upgraded and appropriate structures and conditions to meet the needs of people with reduced mobility, under the slogan "Accessible Beach, Beach for all'.

The bathing area of Castelo do Queijo is the only one with no awards but still the quality of the beach is considered "excellent".

The Blue Flag represents a commitment to both people and the environment, more than enough reason for the Municipality of Porto to engage in the initiative "Ondas de Água Pura" ["Waves of Pure Water", free translation], adopting the image of former beach huts all over the beach equipment as a reminder that all marine litter is caused by human actions, and the consequences of that fact must be faced by all of us.

Also, within the scope of the Blue Flag, a team from the Water Pavilion, managed by the municipal company Águas do Porto, promotes the environmental education and raises awareness on the link between river and sea and the impact of human behaviour. This year's theme is "Do Rio ao Mar sem Lixo" ["From the River to the Sea, Litter free", free translation].
