The Guindais Funicular was decontaminated today so as to safely reopen to the public, starting on Monday, 18th May.

The decontamination was carried out by the Firefighter Brigade of Porto (BSB), and it comprised both funicular booths and the two funicular stations, located at Gustavo Eiffel Avenue and Batalha.

The special cleaning and disinfection of the Funicular of Guindais Funicular is concluded and the Municipal Equipment, which is directly managed by Porto City Hall, following the termination of license by Metro do Porto, can safely reopen to the public.

The Guindais Funicular railway is the property of the Municipality of Porto. Although it was in operation via the municipal company Metro do Porto, as of June 2019, its operation is ensured by Liftech, the operator that won the public tender worth 2.17 million euros.

The Funicular had closed on 8th April, in the context of the current pandemic. During this period, regular passenger transport, with transport passes, was ensured by taxi services, but to these passengers only.

The Hazardous Substances Team of the Firefighters of Porto (BSB) has the necessary know-how and means to deal with dangerous materials and substances, as is the case of the new coronavirus.

It is worth mentioning that the firefighter Brigade has been decontaminating several municipal spaces, using chlorine and ethanol based disinfection materials.
