Dermatologist and researcher at i3S - Institute for Health and Investigation Research of the University of Porto, Manuel António Campos has recently published an article in the prestigious Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. His work demonstrates that the mutations of the tolemorase enzyme re associated with a bad prognosis in the squamous cell carcinoma, which is the second most common type of cancer.

These results are pioneers because not only this is the first time that this link is established but also they can lead to prognosis genetic markers that will allow determining the carcinoma aggressiveness and how to deal with these carcinomas.

This article published in the March issue 2019 had full coverage and editorial honours.

It is worth spotlighting that the last time that a Portuguese researcher (dermatologist Osvaldo Correia) has published an original article in this journal happened 17 years ago.

This research project was part of the PhD thesis by Manuel António Campos, under the supervision of i3S researchers Paula Soares and José Manuel Lopes.

This work was also recognized with honours by the Portuguese Society of Dermatology and venereology (SPDV), and it was granted a prize money worth 15 thousand euros.
