The landmark structure of the Pergola of Foz, the seaside covered walkway facing the Atlantic, in Porto, has been restored by the Municipality. Following this renovation works on the structure itself, the rehabilitation will extend to the balustrade, the ramparts and the staircases.

Rumour has that the structure was projected in 1930, following a trip of the Mayor's wife to Nice, in France, who was inspired by the "Promenades des Anglais" and decided to ask her husband to build one in Porto.

It was built in the framework of the Improvements and Embellishments project of the Avenue Brazil that year of 1930, by Porto City Hall. The works cost about 53 thousand escudos and António Enes Baganha, one of the most important artists of the field in that time, was in charge of the project.

The result of this inspiring idea is the neoclassical style Pergola (Pergula, derived from Latin), painted in golden yellow, which is an optimal spot to contemplate the horizon, to feel the crepuscule taking over the city and to watch beautiful sunsets. Lights and shadows, different architectural perspectives, columns and capitals create fascinating and extraordinary urban images, so take time to visit it!
