John Goodenough, widely credited for the identification and development of the Lithium-ion battery, will donate 500 thousand dollars to the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), with the aim of supporting the work developed by the team of Maria Helena Braga, researcher and professor at FEUP.

Maria Helena Braga's research on solid-state battery has gained reputation in specialized journals and the registration of patents, which has drawn Goodenough's attention to her work. Professor Maria Helena Braga was invited to take part in the Professor's team, at The University of Texas at Austin, where he currently holds the position of professor of mechanical engineering and materials science.

The German born American Professor was awarded the National Medal of Science by President Barack Obama in 2011 and the Charles Stark Draper Prize for his contributions to the lithium-ion battery, in 2014.

John Goodenough decided to donate 500 million dollars to FEUP to support the work developed by FEUP and most especially to convince the industry of the true revolution that is imminent.

"This is an honour and also a renewed responsibility to work better every day, with the opportunity to purchase equipment and fund students", as stated by Helena Braga.

This technology has the advantage to operate at lower temperatures, which can revolutionise the conventional paradigm for electric vehicles to operate under -35 Celsius degree.

Since 1986, John Goodenough has been a Professor at The University of Texas at Austin in the Cockrell School of Engineering departments of Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
