Lausanne is the most recent member of the Great Wine capitals, to which Porto is part of.

Lausanne, Switzerland's fourth largest city, overlooking Lake Geneva and surrounded by countryside and vineyards, including the famous Lavaux vineyard, provides a varied range of white and red wines.

The Great Wine Capitals Network, established in 1999 is now made up of ten cities and wine regions of international prestige, including Adelaide - South Australia (Australia), Bilbao - Rioja (Spain), Bordeaux (France); Lausanne (Switzerland), Mainz - Rheinhessen (Germany), Mendoza (Argentina), San Francisco - Napa Valley (USA), Valparaiso - Casablanca Valley (Chile), Verona (Italy) and Porto (Portugal).

The Network organises events such as the "Best Of Wine Tourism" awards, held annually. This International competition is designed to reward businesses in each member region that have distinguished themselves in categories such as Innovative Wine Tourism Experiences, Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices and Services.

It is worth noting that Porto played host to the 2016 Award ceremony and recently the Quinta do Vallado won an international prize.

For Natacha Litzistorf, the President of Lausanne, being a member of the network "is a great honour. We look forward to sharing our knowledge, history and experience with other members".

The President of the Great Wine Capitals Network, Mario Agliati, congratulated the new member by saying that "it is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Lausanne, representing the canton of Vaud."
