The Museu Romântico [Romantic Museum] reopened to the public recently after having been closed for refurbishing works to the building and to the equipment within.

Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira officially opened the permanent exhibition following nearly one year of restoration works the building has undergone, in the framework of the Regional Operational Programme of the North 2014-2020 (NORTE 2020), for the rehabilitation of municipal museums.

The conservation works are aimed at preserving the cultural and historic heritage, enhanced Rui Moreira.

This project represents the concept of a "City Museum", which includes various centres, each one renovated and open to the public, namely the House Museum Guerra Junqueiro, the House Museum Marta Ortigão Sampaio and the Museu Romântico.

This project has improved accessibilities and cultural facilities are more user friendly.

The new permanent exhibition is now open for visits at the Museu Romântico, set up at Quinta da Macieirinha, in an environment that revives the natural setting of a cottage in Porto from the mid-19th century.

The Mayor of Porto spotlighted that this building has been the residence of King Carlos Alberto of Savoy, who lived in exile in Porto.

Rui Moreira also enthused that "this was already the most visited museum in town, perhaps because of the atmosphere of past times, the gardens at Palácio de Cristal and Casa Tait, which are open to the public, and compose a charming pathway that invites passers-by to enter".

A novelty is the restauration of three pianofortes dating from the 19th century, eight antimony and bronze clocks, traditional clothing from that period and thirteen paintings owned by Porto City Hall (transferred from the National Museum Soares dos reis) as well as a set of engravings and paintings from the Vitorino Ribeiro collection, thus allowing visitors to enjoy the city's heritage.

Besides, the digital and multimedia equipment now in place enables a different approach to the exhibition as it perfectly interplays with the structure.

The Museum is located at Rua de Entre-Quintas, 220 (next to Palácio de Cristal)
