Cities are major players when it comes to tackling climate change as they can boost relevant steps to overcoming the negative impact of global warming.

And Mayor Rui Moreira has not been found wanting in leading the charge against climate change; in fact, the Municipality's policies on climate change can be described with words such as sustainability, energy consumption reduction and performance improvement.

Porto has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 30,5 % between 2004 and 2017, according to the AdEPorto - Porto Energy Agency. This result is achieved largely due to emissions reductions in buildings and the electricity usage patterns, with renewable energy in place.

In addition, Porto raised the CO2 reduction target to 50 percent till 2030, for a more decarbonized city, where citizens are granted access to sustainable and renewable energy.

In December 2016, the Municipality of Porto concluded its Municipal Strategy of Climate Change adaptation (EMAAC), based on the National Plan for Climate Change (PNAC) and in the National Strategy for Climate Change adaptation (ENAAC).
