The city of Porto is taking a step forward to take on a brand new technology: electrically powered buses. Powering a vehicle with electricity costs less than using diesel or natural gas.

The STCP - Public Transport Company of Porto is looking to replace its diesel buses by an electric fleet.

With baby steps, even because this technology itself isn't advanced just yet, the first electric buses will be tested in the framework of the European Consortium FABULOS.EU.

The consortium led by the Finnish Agency for Innovation from Helsinki, who has invited the STCP to join in, as stated by senior officer, Paulo Ferreira.

"The STCP joins the Consortium by invitation of the Virium Forum of Helsinki because it is considered to be an innovative company and it has a good track record of investment projects", the senior office added.

The programme's overall financial allocation is 7.8 million euros co-financed by the European Union (90%) as an outright grant. The project is planned to last three years.

Besides Porto and Finland, Estonia, Norway, The Netherlands and Greece are part of the Consortium.
