Newly discovered photos of the famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo will be on show at the Portuguese Photography Centre, in Porto.
The exhibit "Frida Kahlo - As Suas Fotografias" [Frida Kahlo - Her photographs" (free translation)] shows the world unpublished testimonies of the artist's private life.

Since they were first made public, in Mexico City, in 2009, the exhibit has been touring the entire world and already accounts for over half a million visitors in fifteen different cities.

The next stop is the city of Porto, which will play host to the exhibition, from 6 July to 4 November 2018, at the Portuguese Photography Centre.

Photography played an important role in Frida's life. Her parents and grandparent were professional photographers, and the painter herself shared the passion for this art.

Throughout her entire life, Frida kept a significant collection of daguerreotypes, family photos, self-portraits, photos with special dedications, and even customized photos as if they were paintings.

All this can be seen at the exhibition, now that the acquis has been made public. When Frida died in 1954, her husband and also an artist, Diego Rivera, donated their house - known as the Casa Azul, located in Mexico City, to the Mexican people so that it could be transformed into a museum on the life and work of the painter.

However, a great deal of Frida's collection and legacy was kept hidden from the public eye. And this was the main reason why this private acquis remained unknown for almost five decades.

Now, more than six thousand photographs, some drawings, letters, medicines and even clothes, which belonged to the Mexican painter are part of the exhibition that is touring the Globe.

Under the guidance of Hilda Trujillo Soto, Director of the Frida Kahlo Museum, and curated by Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, famous Mexican photographer and photo historian, the exhibit "Frida Kahlo - As Suas Fotografias", which were symbolically first presented at the Casa Azul, makes this intimate and revealing acquis known to the public.

The exhibition is divided in six thematic sections, namely, Origins; Casa Azul; Politics; Revolutions and Diego; Injured Body; Loves; and Photography, and it also includes a documentary on Frida Kahlo's life.

Part of the revenue from the ticket office goes to the "Associação Salvador", which supports people with motor disabilities.
