The exhibit "Álvaro Lapa: No tempo todo" [Álvaro Lapa: All of Time], which gathers the most thorough retrospective work of the artist Lapa (Évora, 1939 - Porto, 2006) ever presented, opens on 8 February at the Serralves Museum.

Self-taught artist and writer, Lapa first studied Law and a couple of years later he pursues studies in Philosophy, travelling to Paris where he engages with surrealism artists.

As a writer, Álvaro Lapa writes in a very hard-to-read language, not following a logical/narrative reasoning.

In 1976, he joins the faculty of Fine Arts of Porto University as a Professor, where he teaches, for instance, Aesthetics. His teachings have heavily influenced his students.

Álvaro Lapa remains one of the most mysterious Portuguese artists in the 20th century art scene, with a set of work just as visually attractive as elusive.

Lapa's work is also intensely linked to literature, which can be seen in his series of paintings called "Notebooks", dedicated to literary figures such as Homer and Rimbaud.

"Álvaro Lapa: No tempo todo" is organized by the Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art and curated by guest curator Miguel von Hafe Pérez.

The exhibition runs from 8 February to 13 May 2018.

A cycle of performative arts, cinema and thinking will be presented alongside the Álvaro Lapa exhibition - spanning works from various artistic disciplines, most of which have never been displayed before.
