This weekend, Fantasporto offers pretty much endless opportunities to feel optimistic, to escape reality or simply to have a good time in front of a screen.

To borough from fantasy author, David Eddings's words, "Fantasy takes people away from the real world and almost everybody dislikes the real world."

The 39th edition of International Film festival Fantasporto, themed "the "Challenges of Modernity" features a line-up of short films devoted to the Fantasy, Sci-Fi or Terror movies these last days of the festival in the Invicta, starting 1 March, at the Small Auditorium of Rivoli.

It is worth highlighting titles such as "Makr", by Hana Kazim, from United Arab Emirates, or "The Original", by Mexican Director Michelle Cervera Garza.

Also noteworthy is the Portuguese Short "Bluebird", a world premiere with Amanda Sant'Anna, Carlos Fernandes, Gonçalo Veloso, João Lage, João Mendes, featuring poems by Charles Bukowski or the international premiere of "The Desolation Prize", by Canadian Shane Day.

If you're more into Sci-Fi, reserve your seat in front of "The Shipment", also from Canada, by Bobby Bala.

But if you wish to yield to Horror and Magic, then buy the ticket for the world premiere of "The Sonata" (GB/FRA), by Andrew Desmond, and go on a journey beyond imagination. The movie cast includes such names as Rutger Hauer ("Blade Runner"), James Faulkner ("Game of Thrones") and Freya Tingley ("Jersey Boys").

The festival's focus are English language films, for the first time screened in Portugal with English subtitling. The parallel programming comprises different colloquia, workshops and conferences to debate art in this Modern Era.
