Startup from Porto redefines AI world industry

The DefinedCrowd, startup incubated by UPTEC - Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto, is ranked among the 100 best and most promising Artificial Intelligence companies in the world, according to the CB Insights consulting annual Ranking, which highlights projects that are redefining the AI market.

Daniela Braga, alumna of the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, established the DefinedCrowd in 2015, a company specialized in custom data acquisition and labelled Training Data, to create Artificial Intelligence models, by combining machine learning and human-in-the-loop techniques to facilitate the linguistic behaviour of robots.

The company has today 75 workers, seven of them are U.Porto alumni. The startup has offices in Portugal (Porto and Lisbon), in the United States and in Tokyo, as of April.

The DefinedCrowd startup is highlited as one of the most successful among three thousand startups worldwide, operating in the training data area. Its client portfolio includes companies from the Fortune 500 and Fortune 50, such as Mastercard, BMW, Nuance or Yahoo Japan.

Also, the company makes available data in 46 languages, supported by its own community of over 45 thousand members, Neevo by DefinedCrowd, which is spread out all over the world.

In 2018, Definedcrowd received a series A investment of 10 million euros. The investment round, led by Evolution Equity Partners, features Kibo Ventures, Mastercard and EDP Ventures as new investors, combined with additional investment by the current investors, namely Sony, Portugal Ventures, Amazon Alexa Fund and Busy Angels.
