Work to resettle around 52 families in Rainha Dona Leonor quarter is set to get under way.

Fifty-two families will be resettled in the state-of-the-art council homes in Rainha Dona Leonor quarter. The first energy efficiency class A+ social housing in Portugal is on the on-set of the construction work.

Twenty newly build houses will be made available for municipal tenants.

The very run-down neighbourhood is going to be reconstructed and the entire area will be night and day to what is there today. Houses that are built using roofs and facades that are made of asbestos sheets and offer poor living conditions will be rehabilitated and transformed into high standard social housing at affordable rents.

The Court of Auditors has approved the contract and the project was presented today in the Executive Meeting held at Porto City hall.

The contracting process is over, and Porto City Hall launched a public tender. The winning contractor should first rehabilitate the dwelling unit and only then build private housing for sale.

The project includes one bedroom to four bedroom flats, and even 2-storey apartments.

All the houses have a direct or partial view of the mouth of the river Douro as well as private entrance.

According to Housing Counsellor, Manuel Pizarro, the model implemented by the executive of Rui Moreira will allow to do the work, at no cost to the municipality.

The Mayor of Porto and his team are committed to improving local housing and a development like this just goes to show what can be achieved in the city of Porto.
