The opening of the Temporary Market of Bolhão, located at the shopping centre La vie, will happen on May 2, after traders are relocated by the end of April.

Following the authorisation of the Court of Auditors, the works contract will kick-off in May, according to the programme established by the municipal company Go Porto, which will run the two-year project, involving the rehabilitation works and the upgrading of the landmark building.

A strong marketing campaign will be launched to promote the new market location at the shopping centre La vie, where traders have modern infrastructures that enable them to continue their commercial activity.

The vendors who choose not to relocate to the temporary market location have received a compensation by the municipality.

The modernisation project is estimated to be completed within two years' time, and the Market of Bolhão will continue to be a fresh product market, the place will continue true to its traditions and it will maintain its characteristics.

For some 40 years the market required structural refurbishing and renovation. A tough endeavour that hasn't always met either the merchants or the public opinion agreement.

Until Mayor Rui Moreira stepped in and committed to finding a suitable project that would please everyone.

The development of this project involves applications for EU funds, however the sound financial management by Rui Moreira in Porto City Hall guarantees the municipality's equity base to fund the rehabilitation works.

These major rehabilitation and structural works in the Bolhão Market were long due and finally Porto City Hall with Mayor Rui Moreira at the helm has decided to change the future.
