It's been several years now that SEA LIFE Porto is worried with the negative effects of the environmental impact regarding oceans and nature. In 2019, celebrating its 10th anniversary, this institution features a positive carbon footprint, thus becoming the first entity to achieve such a goal in Portugal.

Sea Life Porto is in line with the Paris climate agreement, also referred to as the Paris climate accord goals, namely to achieving sustainability goals and reducing organisations' environmental impacts by reducing the overall quantity of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions.

In order to reach this goal, Sea Life Porto has bought green energy, thus making its energy consumption sustainable all year round. Also, the aquarium fitted solar panels on the roof and endorsed an ambitious plan for reducing consumption, applied frequency energy inverters and exchanged old-style light bulbs for LED ones.

Lastly, the institution signed carbon emissions reductions and renewable energy certificates, via a United Nations global programme and sponsoring renewable energy.

SEA LIFE Porto carbon footprint is estimated at 1108 annual tons, and the institution compensated 105% in line with the International Norm ISO 14021:2016.

The compensation of the carbon footprint was calculated including all emissions resulting from the centre daily activity, energy and fuel consumed, visitors and employees movements all year long.

Sea Life Porto is an aquarium in Porto. It opened on 15 June 2009 and it is one of the Sea Life Centres in Europe, which are owned by Merlin Entertainments.
