The INTHERWASTE thematic seminar in Porto is the first of a series of 4 thematic seminars organised by the INTHERWASTE project on "Waste Deposit in Heritage Cities/ Heritage Areas of Cities".

The seminar took place in Porto, on March 8th and 9th and the main goal was to focus on establishing Regional Operational Programmes in order to develop integrated eco-innovative strategies as well as mobilizing a mutual learning plan regarding waste management's policy within tourist cities.

Organized by the Municipality of Porto, the seminar aimed at debating good practices and policies regarding waste management in historic sites and city centres, which struggle with high tourist inflow and large amounts of waste production.

As it is a challenge to manage waste deposit in such terms, the project partner cities (Córdoba, Krakow, Porto, Syracuse and Tallinn) presented best practices on this thematic, and guest city Florence (Italy) showcased two additional practices, including underground waste collection process and contribution to the city history research and container-systems in underground stations in Florence UNESCO sites.

The INTHERWASTE project - Interregional Heritage Waste - has a twofold objective, namely, experience exchange and policy improvements for sustainable waste management in European Heritage Cities.

The next thematic seminar will take place in Krakow, on June 7th and 8th.
