There will be another bridge connecting Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, as announced this morning by the Mayors of both cities. This infrastructure will be of great importance for both Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia as it will enable to enhance the existing mobility policies.

The construction will be paid by both municipalities and it will be named after the former Bishop of Porto, who recently passed away, D. António Francisco dos Santos, "a man of proximity, kind and esteemed".

This will be the seventh bridge to connect the riverside areas of Porto and Gaia, in the low height path of river Douro, in its narrower area, between the São João and Freixo bridges.

This construction work should be concluded in the next four years, conservatively estimated at 12 million euros, as stated by Mayor of Porto, Rui Moreira. This enterprise will be paid in equal shares by the municipalities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, with no external financing. Also, this work will include the pedestrianisation of the inferior tray of bridge Luís I and refurbishing work in D. Maria bridge, with bicyclists and pedestrian lanes.

For the Mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Eduardo Vitor Rodrigues, building this bridge represents "the corollary of the regeneration work regarding the riverside areas of both municipalities".
