This exhibit will provide the perfect blend of playful art and pure entertainment

Artwork that sprung from waste collected in the beaches of the Invicta is on display in the entrance hall of the Rectory building of the University of Porto. It will be on show till 31 December. Entrance is free. 

Sea Monsters ("Monstros Marinhos") is the theme of the exhibit jointly organized by the Interdisciplinary Center of Maritime and Environmental Investigation (CIIMAR) and the campaign Ocean Action Hub. The result is a set of sculptures and installations made of garbage collected at the beaches of Porto, by Ricardo Nicolau de Almeida.

Take some time during the week or over the weekend and go visit the mesmerising artwork on show at the Rectory of the University of Porto, a solid reminder of the plastic threat facing the marine environment.

The exhibit has been designed for entertaining and educational moments, featuring an extravagant octopus with plastic tentacles, a blue fish with googly eyes and a jerrycan body, or marine plants made of fishing ropes and nets and the "Sala dos Idiotas" [Room of the idiots", free translation], which is filled with coloured human faces, also objects and items dragged by the sea currents and tides and a site-specific installation that shows a variety of shapes and colours of marine garbage.

All sculptures have been made of plastic collected in several beaches in Porto and the Porto Metropolitan area, as Ricardo Nicolau de Almeida devotes his time to ocean trash art. In 2019, the artist presented a sculpture made of materials collected from all the Portuguese coast at the Melting Gastronomy Summit.

This exhibition is entrance free and can be visited from Monday to Saturday, from 10am to 6pm.
