The Municipality of Porto is participating in the Bioblitz'2019, which runs at the Park of the Serralves Foundation from 1 and 7 April. This event focuses on nature and biodiversity.

The City Hall invites everyone to go and take a look to what is going on in the "Municípios LIPOR" space within Bioblitz, namely an exhibition of Nature Based Solutions to develop farming activities in urban areas.

One of the suggestions is a "Bug Hotel", which was set up by using recovered materials as a way to recycling waste.

Also on site, visitors will have the opportunity to observe an Aquaponics System that combines conventional aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as snails, fish, crayfish or prawns in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water) in a symbiotic environment.

In an aquaponics system, water from an aquaculture system is fed to a hydroponic system where the by-products are broken down by nitrifying bacteria initially into nitrites and subsequently into nitrates that are utilized by the plants as nutrients. Then, the water is recirculated back to the aquaculture system.

Very much used in many societies nowadays, there is also a Vertical farming system, where food is produced in vertically stacked layers. The modern ideas of vertical farming use indoor farming techniques and controlled-environment agriculture (CEA) technology, where all environmental factors can be controlled, such as artificial control of light, environmental control (humidity, temperature, gases...) and fertigation.

And what's best is that proper management means that no herbicides or pesticides are required.
