Casa do Cinema Manoel de Oliveira features ways of seeing the art of film

Every Tuesday, until the end of June, Serralves features cinema sessions inspired by the work of renowned Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira. The programme “Cinema and Photography: Visões Espectrais” invites audiences to discuss both photo and film as means of expression from the point of view of death. The starting point of the cinema cycle is the film “O Estranho Caso de Angélica”, by Manoel de Oliveira. The plot revolves around a picture of a newly-deceased girl who is smiling.

Porto hosts the Thinking Football Summit promoted by the Liga Portugal

Porto City Hall provided the Super Bock Arena - Pavilhão Rosa Mota, as unanimously adopted during the Executive Meeting held yesterday, to the Portugal League Thinking Football Summit, a European event that will take place between 2 and 5 September. The Thinking Football Summit, which is promoted by the Portugal League, will have an estimate financial impact of 4.5 million euros. The support to the implementation of this initiative is formalised for four editions, until 2024.

Dog is Man’s best friend, indeed. In Porto, Ânimas (Associação Portuguesa para a Intervenção com Animais de Ajuda Social) is implementing the “projecto Envolver” to help senior citizens take the first steps into an active life, following two lockdowns and preventive restrictive measures. The project is about encouraging the elderly to go back to an active life with the help of these companion animals that play an important role in reducing stress and anxiety.

Supporting local businesses in Porto: the programme starts today

Supporting local businesses in Porto: the campaign comes into effect today, 3rd May, and the municipal investment can amount to as much as 500 thousand euros. The Municipality of Porto takes over the 2-euro rebate in purchase equal or greater than 20 euros, up to a maximum of 100 euros per buying, in retail business that are included in the programme. This support programme is in place until 30 July and it is entirely supported by Porto City Hall.

U.Porto biologist is awarded a National Geographic Society grant

Luís Ceríaco, biologist and curator of the National History Museum of the University of Porto (MHNC-UP), was awarded a National Geographic Society Grant to study in the Serra da Neve in Angola, one of the most unchartered and fascinating regions in the African continent.

Porto hosts EU Social Summit on 7 May

Porto will host the European Union Social Summit on 7 May. The meeting is organised by the Portuguese Government jointly with the European Commission, under the Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The summit is organised around two events: a high-level conference on the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights, on 7 May at the Customs Building, and an informal meeting of Heads of State or Government on 8 May, at the Super Bock Arena – Pavilhão Rosa Mota.

Sometimes one show isn’t enough, as we see the FITEI agenda and realise that as of tomorrow and until 16th May, FITEI – International Iberian Theatre Festival takes to the stage 14 in-person performances and 10 online shows to grasp the concepts of environmental, political, individual, affective, sexual and mental sustainability. Seven performances are world premieres and ten take to the national stages for the first time.

The muppie campaign by Porto City Hall to raise awareness on the importance of complying with the preventive measures regarding the fight against Covid-19 has been distinguished at the International Design Competition Graphis Awards 2021 with an honourable mention.
