July is just around the corner, and with it, three amazing Saturdays that offer jazz lovers the opportunity to go back to amazing outings to the sound of swing and blue notes, polyrhythms and improvisation. This will also be the time to celebrate 30 years of the Jazz in the Park programme.

Serralves will be the place to be on the three first Saturdays in July, to celebrate the three decades of Jazz in the Park event. The rendezvous hour is at dusk and the first session happens on 3 July, at 6 pm.

The event gathers both national and foreign musicians, with the first show by Rita Maria (vocals) and Filipe Raposo (piano). For the first time in Porto, the duo will present on stage “The Art of Song: When Baroque Meets Jazz”. Theirs is quite an unconventional approach to this music genre, which “reveals that this [genre] still offers different work possibilities, by combining two music genres, of two different eras, jazz and baroque music, on what they have in common: improvisation”.

On 10 July, the band by Pedro Sousa, debuts “Má Estrela”, an exclusive for the Jazz in the Park. “Today one of the most relevant names in the creative jazz and improvised music in our country, with echoes from other parts of the world, Pedro Sousa has built a name in electroacoustic music, which is reflected in his latest project, especially for his taste of dub, a reggae subgenre, which is characterized by the handling of previously recorded material”.

The last weekend of jazz in Serralves joins Italy, Belgium, Portugal and France, for the Going project, inspired by trance music from Northern Africa and the Middle East that includes influences by krautrock by uns Can, the minimalism by Steve Reich and the “sheets of sound” by John Coltrane.
