Christian Petzold film retrospective runs at Campo Alegre Municipal Theatre, from 28th November till 4th December

Christian Petzold is a German film director, an elevated figure of the German contemporary cinema. Petzold studied Drama at the Berlin's German Academy for Film and Television (DFFB). He also purisued studies in film direction while working as an assistant director to Harun Farocki and Hartmut Bitomsky.
Bteween the late 1990's and the year2000, Christian Petzold premiered "Die innere Sicherheit / The State I Am In", which was also partially shot in Portugal.
The film is about a terrorist family, who live clandestinely with their adolescent daughter. This movie underlines the theme of Geramn History and the ghosts from its past, themes that are recurrent in his work, especially is pervious work like the film, "Pilotinnen", which is his first film, directed for his film school graduation in 1995.
Although the Berlin School of cinema is often associated with realism and political cinema, Petzold's films, mainly deal with conflicts between life and death.
In "Gespenster", for example, the main character leads a ghost-like existence. In "Yella", the protagonist is dead at the beginning of the film.
In 2008, his film "Jerichow", tells the story of a soldier who, having returned from Afghanistan to Prignitz, starts dating married women. The movie was nominated in the main competition at the 65th Venice International Film Festival in 2008.
