Danton's Death premieres at São João National Theatre and marks the beginning of the Season

The Director of the National Theatre São João, Nuno Cardoso presents his first in-house production of this Season on 18th September, at 9pm, navigating the text Georg Büchner wrote in 1835 while hiding from the police, Danton's Death.

Probably one of the greatest political tragedies ever written, the play, which is set during the French Revolution, in 1794, tells the story of Georges Jacques Danton, one of the leading figures of the said Revolution, especially as the first president of the Committee of Public Safety.

The Revolution was reaching its climax, following a random series of bloody purges. Danton is tormented by his part in the killing. Robespierre, Danton's political rival, decides Danton's fate. Two men, once friends are now fierce enemies. Death awaits.

The play's starting point is the spring of 1784 and the audience is faced with Danton's final moments, where death and execution are eloquently dramatized. George Danton is played by Albano Jerónimo.

The performance will be on stage till 29 September (this session will have Portuguese Sign translation and audio description.
