The First Photography Biennial of Porto takes place from 16 May to 2 July 2018 with 16 exhibitions, 11 curators, and 53 artists targeted at professionals, enthusiasts, students and general public.

The theme for this first edition is "Adaptação e Transição" [Adaptation and Transition", free translation] and it will bring to town renowned personalities such as Krysztof Candrowicz, Artistic Director of the Hamburg Photography Triennial.

Cultural and environmental changes and the acknowledgment of the human being as a driving force or a depletion figure of the planet's resources are the starting point towards launching the debate on the future.

The Ci.CLO Photography Biennial of Porto features the exhibition "Stories on Earthly Survival", curated by Krysztof Candrowicz, at the Portuguese Photography Centre, on 18 May.

The activities programme includes several exhibits that will be on show in different venues all over Porto, presenting innovative projects by national and international artists, both established and upcoming artists, namely at Gardens of Palácio de Cristal, the Rectory of the University of Porto, Galleries and Main Hall of Porto City Hall, Mira Fórum, Palácio de Belomonte, Portuguese Photography Centre, Museum of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, Salut Au Monde!, Casa do Infante, Gallery Painel of the Public Health Institute of the University of Porto, Palacete Viscondes de Balsemão, Casa Tait, Metro Station of São Bento and Aliados.

Following the Porto Biennial, some exhibits will be selected for a national and international itinerancy, in order to reach different audiences.

The programme of the Ci.CLO Bienal'19 aims at boosting methods of training-creation-action, workshops, and the editing of a Green-Guide.
"The purpose is to boost artists and the arts community, hence raising awareness of sustainability in the arts scene", explained Virgílio Ferreira, Artistic Director and renowned photographer.

Also, artistic residency programmes, exhibits, public fora and creation projects enable the Ci.CLO Bienal'19 to establish relevant intercultural cooperation between Portugal and other countries.

The Ci.CLO Bienal'19 is supported by the General Direction of Arts and Porto City Hall, as well as seminal international partners as the Asia-Europe Foundation and the Triennial Photography of Hamburg, one of the major photography events in Europe.
