Summer School on Art & Cinema presents an open programme to the community in Porto.
Cinema and contemporary art go hand-in-hand this week in Porto in the framework of the 2nd edition of the Summer School on Art & Cinema, an initiative by the School of Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University that brings together students, artists, and directors till Saturday.

The programme features exhibits, installations, film screenings and talks.
"The programme is targeted at the population at large, with free film screenings and exhibits, and encompasses different approaches regarding cinema and the images in motion", explains Nuno Crespo, organiser of the event and curator of the Julião Sarmento exhibit, on show at the School of Arts, in Foz.

On 3 July, the Municipal Theatre Rivoli hosts Atom Egoyan, a renowned Egyptian filmmaker that will be in Porto, for the first time, for the screening of the film "The Sweet Hereafter" (1997) and a debate, together with Julião Sarmento and Guilherme Blanc. During this talk, Egoyan will address the transdisciplinary nature of contemporary cinema from his personal artistic experience.

At Casa das Artes, the "Admirável Mundo Novo" features a film selection by the Brazilian artist Ana Vaz, on 4 July, jointly organised with Cineclube do Porto. The film screening is followed by a debate with filmmaker Carles Guerra. On 5 July, Todd Solondz - who is an award winning filmmaker in such festivals as Sundance, Berlin, Fantasporto and Venice Film Festival - will present his film "Life during Wartime" (2009) at Cinema Passos Manuel, in a partnership with the Festival Curtas de Vila de Conde.

These five days devoted to cinema conclude at the Serralves Foundation, with the screening of films by João Maria Gusmão and Pedro Paiva. The open talk will be attended by Sabeth Buchmann (historian, art critic and professor at the school of Fine Arts of Vienna), Rainer Bellembaum (filmmaker and professor at the University for Applied Arts of Vienna) and Nuno Crespo (Director of the School of Arts).

All sessions start at 9.30pm.
