The Innovation and Health Research Institute of the University of Porto - i3S- was selected by an independent jury as one of the finalists for the RegioStars 2018 European Awards.

These prizes are regarded as the "Oscars" for the Regional Development, which distinguish the most inspiring projects at regional level and are funded by the European Union.

The Installation project by i3S is one of the finalists in the Category 1: Supporting smart industrial transition.

The application was submitted by the North Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N) which spotlights the quality of this "superlab" that gathered researchers from three centres of the University of Porto: IBMC, INEB and IPATIMUP.

The basis for the application was "the exceptional nature of the team, working in the areas of cancer and neurobiological research, as well as neurological diseases who have received numerous prestigious international awards for their work, namely the development of new products or lines of research".

The winners of the RegioStars 2018 (there are five categories) will be announced on 9th October, on the occasion of the European Week of Regions and Cities.

It is worth mentioning that UPTEC - Scientific and Technologic Park from Porto University has been the first Portuguese project to be honoured with the RegioStars Awards in 2013. It won the "Smart Growth-Connecting universities to regional growth" category, granted by the European Commission with the purpose of publicly acknowledging the innovative investments in the field of regional development.
