Sky watchers can witness the partial lunar eclipse from Quinta do Covelo on 16 July, at the Centre for Environmental Education through the visual observation with a telescope, guided by experts. This event is entrance free and children aged six or more should be accompanied by an adult.

At Quinta do Covelo, the partial lunar eclipse should be visible around 9.30pm, and the shading phase will become more evident around 10.30pm. The moon's interaction with the earth should cover 65% of the moon. The last vestige of any faint tarnishing should disappear around midnight.

Besides sky gazing at the moon, sky watchers can observe Jupiter and the rings of Saturn, which are the most extensive ring system of any planet in the Solar System.

This event is held in the framework of the Municipal Programme "Ambiente em Família" ["Family and Environment", free translation], and it is organised by Porto Planetarium- Living Science Centre and the Astrophysics Institute and Space Science (IA).

This event is more visible in the Eastern Hemisphere, aka the "Old World": Africa, Europe and western Asia. Conversely, for central and eastern Asia and Australia, the eclipse will still be in progress when the moon sets during the early hours of 17 July.

Also, 16 July marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 to land astronauts on the moon.
This activity is subject to favourable weather conditions.
