As part of the twin cities agreement, the Nagasaki City Council invited a delegation from the Municipality of Porto to take part in the 79th Peace Ceremony. The event took place on 9 August, marking the day of the atomic bombing in 1945.

Porto's delegation, consisting of two public school students, a head teacher and two municipality representatives, took part in several public events over three days, including the Peace Celebration Ceremony. The group also visited the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Peace Memorial.

The students included in the delegation also had the opportunity to participate in a discussion forum involving around 400 young people from several cities in Japan.

During the visit, preparatory meetings were also held regarding the educational exchange that will involve students from the Agrupamento de Escolas Garcia de Orta schools grouping and students from the Nagasaki Hokuyodai High School, next school year.

The entire delegation was welcomed by the Mayor of Nagasaki, Suzuki Shiro. The meetings were also attended by representatives of the city government and the Portuguese Embassy in Japan.

The ceremony, which is celebrated annually, aimed to enhance the value of peace for younger generations, alerting the world to the catastrophic consequences of using nuclear weapons.
