Project "Embrulha." of Porto helps create a better tomorrow

The project "Embrulha." is a joint initiative by Porto City Hall and LIPOR - Intermunicipal Waste Management of Greater Porto, to fight food waste in the catering sector of the city of Porto.

This project was among the 34 spotlighted initiatives by Unravel Tomorrow, as a best practice in the cities to propel social activism.

In the "Faces of Tomorrow" the work of Susana Freitas is highlighted as a "project that prevents the production of biowaste. Through her work, Susana strives to engage the community and stakeholders in food waste reduction, in order to promote and scale a behavioural change."

The acknowledgment of "Embrulha." Project as one of the Lipor collaborative projects, which "provides biodegradable foodie bags to restaurants, allowing customers to take their leftovers home", helps to change people's minsedt as taking leftovers and thus reduces food waste.

The Unravel Tomorrow is developed by a consortium of 6 organisations from 6 different European countries, combining different organisational profiles - Universities, Businesses and NGOs that empower a new generation of pioneers to unravel the present and create a better tomorrow through the work of a new generation of pioneers.

About "Embrulha."

The Project was launched in the semester of 2018 and its main goal is to fight food waste in restaurants in the city of Porto; the project enabled to retrieve 3, 72 tonnes of food, as well as to avoid the emissions of approximately 780 kg of CO2-equivalent.

This joint initiative by Porto City Hall and Lipor was launched in September 2017, and already 36 restaurants have joined the project; also, over 10 200 food cartons have been distributed, each with an average capacity to preserve 364 grams of edible food.
